The profession of environmental, natural resources, and energy law offers exciting opportunities for Lewis & Clark Law graduates, over a thousand of whom have gone on to interesting careers across the United States and all over the world.
The field is vast. Most of our graduates work in private law firms, government agencies, and nonprofit offices. Some work for international organizations; others teach environmental law in colleges or law schools. Some graduates find themselves in exciting non-traditional careers.

Cameron Jimmo ’16 is an Associate Attorney with Perkins Coie in Anchorage, Alaska where he leverages his experience as a former assistant attorney general with the Alaska Department of Law’s Environmental Section. A member of the firm’s Environment & Natural Resources practice group, Cameron’s background includes managing a docket of compliance and enforcement issues.
Souvanny Miller ’16, is an Associate with Hornecker Cowling LLP in Medford, Oregon where she focuses on municipal law, land use, civil litigation, family law and appeals
Stephanie Grant ’15, is an Associate in the Litigation Department at Tonkon Torp in Portland, Oregon. Prior to joining Tonkon Torp, she served as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Mary Beck Briscoe, at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. Stephanie worked on a number of civil and criminal matters, including administrative, environmental, employment, civil rights, and Federal Arbitration Act cases.
Matthew Preusch ’13 is an Attorney with Keller Rohrback in their Complex Litigation Group focusing on environmental, consumer protection, and government entity litigation. Before joining Keller Rohrback, Matthew served as an honors attorney in the Oregon DOJ’s appellate and trial divisions. During law school, he served as a judicial extern for the Hon. Michael W. Mosman in the District of Oregon. Prior to law school, he spent 10 years as a journalist, covering news for The Oregonian, The New York Times and other publications
Elizabeth Rosso LLM ’14 is a Shareholder with Jordan Ramis and focuses her practice on environmental law. She has experience ith the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act; natural resources conservation and protection under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, Coastal Zone Management Act, and Endangered Species Act; and spill and release response. Prior to entering private practice, Elizabeth served for 14 years as an officer in the Navy’s Judge Advocate General’s Corps.
Kent van Alstyne ’15, joined the southwest Washington law firm of Phillips Burgess. Prior to joining Phillips Burgess, he was a staff attorney with the Pierce County Housing Justice Project. During law school, van Alstyne was a full-time law clerk for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, a law clerk for the Oregon Land Use Board of Appeals, and a summer intern for a senior advocate of the Supreme Court of India.
Laura Kerr ’14, is an Associate at Stoel Rives in the Portland, Oregon office. She works with issues involving air and water quality, waste management, chemical spills, land contamination, and other environmental liabilities.

Paula Brosnahan LLM, specializes in environmental, planning and resource management law at Chapman Tripp in New Zealand.
Gregory Adams ’06 is a principal of the law firm of Richardson Adams, PLLC. His law practice focuses on energy regulatory, transactional, and litigation matters, as well as natural resource and environmental law matters.
Paul Conable ’97 is Co-chair of the Litigation Department at Tonkon Torp LLP, representing both individuals and businesses in contract and investment disputes, government investigations and environmental matters.
Jeff Fereday ’80, is a senior practitioner in the natural resources, environmental and energy group at the Boise, Idaho law firm of Givens Pursley LLP, where he represents municipal water suppliers, industrial clients, irrigators, land developers, mining companies and nonprofit organizations in issues relating to environmental law, water rights, endangered species, wetlands, mining and public lands.

Jerry Fish ’82, is a partner at Stoel Rives LLP in Portland, Oregon, where he handles cases relating to oil and gas exploration and storage, hydroelectric project relicensing and compliance, and mining for gold, silver, copper, coal and industrial minerals.
Craig Trueblood ’85, is a partner in the Seattle law firm of Preston Gates and Ellis, where he provides counsel for a diverse group of corporate and government clients in the areas of environmental, land use and real estate law
James Martin ’81, joined Beatty & Wozniak, P.C. as senior counsel in June of 2013. Jim was the Regional Administrator for the U.S. EPA, and prior to that the Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources under Governor Ritter.

Liz Crosson ’08, joined the LA County Chief Sustainability Office in California and is helping to advance the regional sustainability plan by serving as a resource for cities across Los Angeles County in California.

Phil Schiliro ’81, joined Barack Obama’s presidential campaign as director of the Washington, D.C., office. Following the election, he served as director of the Congressional Liaison Office for President Obama’s transition team before being named as an assistant to the president and director of legislative affairs for the White House. In 2011, Schiliro moved from the Office of Legislative Affairs to a new position as a special advisor to the president, where he served through Fall of 2011. In 2014, he served a short period of time as the President’s Health Care Advisor. Currently, he is advising Grow New Mexico, a community development organization, and is Managing Director of Schiliro Barnett, a consulting business that focuses on nonprofit organizations.
Peter Monson ’82, is the former Clear Creek County, Colorado Commissioner. Previously, he has served as the Assistant Section Chief of the Indian Resources Section at the U.S. Department of Justice. Before his retirement, he successfully litigated numerous and complex lawsuits involving water rights, hunting and fishing rights, land claims, mineral and oil and gas issues, Indian gaming, environmental issues involving Indian lands and natural resources, and defense of federal agency actions.
John Shurts ’83, is the General Counsel in the Legal Division of the Northwest Power and Conservation Council, a unique Congressionally-established organization that helps the Pacific Northwest states make critical decisions that balance the multiple purposes of the Columbia River and its tributaries.
Aunnie Steward ’01, was hired by the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., through the honors program in 2003. In 2006, she moved back home to Alaska to work for the U.S. Attorney’s office where she prosecutes environmental crimes under federal environmental laws.
Meredith Price ’13, is an attorney at Intel Corporation. Previously she was an Associate with Perkins Coie.
Chuck D. Barlow LLM ’95, is vice president of environmental policy and strategy for Entergy Corporation. He previously served as General Counsel of the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.
Dennis Treacy ’83, is the Executive Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer at Smithfield Foods, where he directs numerous company-wide efforts that have earned Smithfield a national reputation as an industry leader, particularly in the areas of environmental stewardship, animal welfare and sustainability. He previously served as the director of the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.

Robin Kundis Craig ’96 is the James I. Farr Presidential Endowed Professor of Law at the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law in Salt Lake City, Utah. Robin specializes in all things water, including the relationships between climate change and water; the water-energy-food nexus; the Clean Water Act, the intersection of water issues and land issues; ocean and coastal law; marine biodiversity and marine protected areas; water law; and the relationships between environmental law and public health.

Tanya Sanerib ’02 is International Legal Director and Senior Attorney for Center for Biological Diversity’s International Program to protect imperiled species and biological diversity worldwide.
Carl Bruch ’96 is the Senior Attorney and Co-Director of International Programs for the Environmental Law Institute in Washington, D.C. where he draws upon his extensive experience internationally in helping countries develop and implement laws, policies, and institutional frameworks to effectively manage water resources, biodiversity, forests, and other natural resources.

Samuel D. Rauch III ’94 is Deputy Assistant Administrator for Regulatory Programs for International Fisheries for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Takamichi Sekine, LLM ’91, is a professor at the School of Policy Studies, Kwansei Gakuin University, where he teaches courses in the areas of Environmental Law, Comparative Environmental Law, Environmental Assessment. He is also legal adviser for Japan’s largest environmental organization, the Nature Conservation Society of Japan, and a member of the Environmental Center of the Japan Bar Association. He has pioneered ground-breaking environmental public interest litigation in Japan.
