Program: On-Campus MSL in Environmental, Natural Resources, & Energy Law
Graduation Date: May 2024
After earning her Master’s in the Study of Environmental Law (MSL) from Lewis & Clark Law School, Kayla Sardarov immersed herself in sustainability education through an online cohort with Simply Sustainable. This six-week program not only expanded her knowledge of sustainability but also provided opportunities for community building and professional networking.
Kayla’s journey toward an MSL was rooted in her undergraduate studies at California State University Channel Islands, where she earned a degree in Environmental Communications. While working at Pepperdine Caruso School of Law after graduation, Kayla became curious about the legal aspects of environmental issues. This curiosity inspired her decision to pursue the MSL program at Lewis & Clark.
“I wanted to build upon my previous environmental knowledge and explore the legal frameworks that shape environmental policy and regulation,” Kayla explains. “To make a meaningful impact in the field, I realized I needed to learn the legal side of environmental issues as well. The MSL degree allowed me to bridge that gap, equipping me with the tools to advocate for sustainable practices and influence policy change.”
During her time in the program, Kayla pursued an externship with Food & Water Watch, a nonprofit organization dedicated to sustainable practices and environmental justice. As a legal intern, she worked closely with both the legal and communications teams, gaining valuable insights into the operations of environmental lawyers and the role of communications within advocacy work. “It was an invaluable learning experience,” Kayla shares. “The class that connected me to the externship was also insightful, as I got to hear about my peers’ experiences and learn from their perspectives.”
Kayla’s dedication to understanding both the legal and communications sides of environmental issues exemplifies her commitment to creating meaningful change. With her MSL and hands-on experience, she is well-prepared to continue advocating for sustainability and advancing environmental protections.
