Conference Mission Statement

The mission of the conference is to enrich legal advocacy for animals through sharing ideas, knowledge, and practical skills, as well as providing educational and networking opportunities.

History of Conference

The Animal Law Conference at Lewis & Clark was the very first academic conference to address the subject of animal law.  In 1993, a small contingency of Lewis & Clark law students interested in animal welfare established the conference, a one-day symposium addressing wildlife issues.  The event was a success.  Members of L&C’s Student Animal Legal Defense Fund chapter made the conference an annual event

2009 Conference Recap

Last year’s conference explored animal law and its link to other areas of the law and professional disciplines, philosophies, and social movements. Panel sessions included topics such as the link between animal law and domestic violence; climate change; international trade; religion; the media; and social justice movements. The conference addressed hot topics in animal law, cutting-edge legislation, criminal law, and a Holocaust survivor’s moving perspective on animal issues.

We were thrilled to welcome Nicholas D. Kristof, two-time Pulitzer Prize winning author and New York Times columnist, as our Keynote Speaker and Jonathan Lovvorn, Vice President & Chief Counsel for Animal Protection Litigation & Research at the Humane Society of the United States, as our Keynote Address at our opening reception.
