Lewis & Clark Law School Animal Legal Defense Fund
Our Mission: Helping Animals through the Law
As the very first student chapter of the Animal Legal Defense Fund, the Lewis & Clark Animal Legal Defense Fund is devoted to enhancing the welfare and legal status of all nonhuman animals. Our primary goal is to educate ourselves and others concerning the issues and laws that affect animals and to influence positive change.
Who We Are:
Established in 1993, Lewis & Clark’s was the first student chapter of the Animal Legal Defense Fund. We have an impressive membership of hundreds of JDs and LLMs from around the country and abroad.
What We Do:
We provide a forum for education, advocacy, and scholarship, aiming to both protect the lives and advance the interests of animals through the legal system while striving to raise the profile of animal law.
We coordinate opportunities for animal law pro bono work, community service, and activism while holding informative and celebratory events throughout the year that promote critical thinking about animals’ various relationship to humans and our legal duties to those animals.
We play in integral role in organizing the annual Animal Law Conference, the nation’s longest-running convention dedicated to animal law issues. We also share a suite with the Animal Law Review, the leading journal of its kind. Finally, we work closely with Lewis & Clark’s core of Animal Law faculty, who comprise the Center for Animal Law Studies.
