Valeria Picazo Zamarripa

Mexico
In-Person MSL Candidate ’25

Everything that lives, even a common domestic housefly, has something of value to share with youwhenever you are ready for the experience.

– J. Allen Boone

Valeria is originally from Mexico City, where she graduated with honors from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science. Her educational journey continued with an internship in Large Animal Medicine and Surgery at the University of Guelph, Canada.

Driven by a desire to connect and work with other animals and their human companions, Valeria pursued a Shelter Medicine internship at the University of Illinois. This experience deepened her commitment to compassionate and high standard animal care in multiple species.

Valeria has long been dedicated to advancing animal welfare and having an impact in underserved communities. She is passionate about promoting inclusivity and equality, both within the professional and personal circles, and advocates strongly for improved accessibility to veterinary care.

Valeria’s journey led her to the MSL program, where she aims to contribute constructively to the animal rights discourse, keeping a balanced scientific approach. She aspires to become a champion for animal welfare and environmental sustainability, and is a strong believer that animals have much to teach us, humans – animals are teachers of living in the moment, teachers of neutrality. Through her previous experiences, she has realized that by fostering a culture that embraces greater understanding and connection with each other, we can continue to shift towards a world free of violence for all living beings.

Growing up in a motorcycle-loving family, Valeria’s love for the outdoors is deeply rooted. She enjoys activities in nature and exploring new destinations.
