Vanessa Yazicigil

Degree: JD ’11
Practice area(s):
  • Business Law
  • Intellectual Property Law

Undergraduate & Previous Work Experience: I received a BS in Computer Engineering from Portland State University. While I was an undergrad, I was an intern at Intel, and I continued working at Intel as a component design engineer after graduation.

Who is your current employer? I am currently an associate at Blakely Sokoloff Taylor & Zafman.

What is your particular area of interest pertaining to law? My primary focus is intellectual property law, especially patent law. I work with inventors to pursue patent protection for their inventions. I am also interested in trademark law.

Were you involved with any extracurricular activities? In law school, I was an articles editor for the Lewis & Clark Law Review. I also helped coordinate events on Constitutional Law issues for the Federalist Society Chapter at Lewis & Clark.

What do you like to do for fun? Exploring the great outdoors (especially hiking with my toddler in a backpack-style child-carrier), cooking, and reading articles related to health and science.

Favorite places in Portland? Forest Park, the Pearl District, and Powell’s Bookstore.

Why did you pick Lewis & Clark Law School? I picked Lewis & Clark because it is a great school in a great city!

What did you like most about Lewis & Clark? For me, two of the best things about Lewis & Clark are the people and the location. Lewis & Clark has great professors, and there is a collegial atmosphere amongst the students. I also loved the peaceful study locations surrounded by trees.

What was your favorite experience at Lewis & Clark? My favorite experience was attending a talk given by Justice Kennedy.

Any advice for new students? Try to find a balance between studying and the other parts of your life. In law school, there is really no end to how much you can study, so it is good to step back and remember that there are other important things in life!
