Dana is a recipient of the Center for Animal Law Studies Online Animal Law Award.
Dana is co-publisher at The Gryphon Press. The Gryphon Press’ award-winning titles are taught in schools and in animal shelters, and they are endorsed by humane education and animal welfare/ rights organizations. The mission of the press is to address the variety of challenges faced by non-human animals—domestic, wild, and farmed—and to present those challenging issues to children so that they gain insights into and develop empathy for every animal life.
The Gryphon Press has published books about topics such as puppy mills, spay-neuter, wild bird trafficking, the fur industry, neglect and abuse of dogs, rabbits, hamsters, and horses, the need for international cooperation to preserve the lives of migrating birds, and a book by prominent ethologist Jonathan Balcombe about recreational fishing and the pain that fishes feel. Ten Gryphon titles have been translated into Simplified Chinese and are being used as the curriculum for the first humane education program in China.
Dana received her BA from Carleton College and her law degree from American
University, both with honors. She served on the board of the Association of Professional Humane Educators (APHE) and is a citizen lobbyist for The Humane Society of the United States.
“I’m thrilled to be a part of the Lewis & Clark Animal Law community as I pursue my LLM degree to sharpen and hone my legal skills to use the law to bring about
fundamental change for animals. I’m excited by the clever and novel cases and theories being used in all fields of law to advance not only animal welfare, but the beginning of true animal rights. Overcoming any system of oppression is a relay race, and I want to do my part in the long race that is transforming the way non-human animals are treated by and interact with people.”
Center for Animal Law Studies is located in Wood Hall on the Law Campus.
