Gikui Gichuhi received the Center for Animal Law Studies’ International Advocates Animal Law LLM Scholarship. Upon graduating, she returned to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) in Kenya as the head of the Wildlife Crimes Unit.
Prior to joining CALS, she was also the deputy head of the ODPP Land, Environmental, and Related Crimes Division. She joined ODPP in 2012 and was selected in 2013 to deal with the growing menace of wildlife poaching, trafficking and related crime. She played a key role in the development of the first ODPP Wildlife Standard Operating Procedures and Rapid Reference Guidelines booklet which was produced due to an inter agency engagement to provide much needed guidance to prosecutors, investigators and stakeholders in the field on evidential elements and charging decisions. This has led to improved investigations and prosecution leading to increased convictions. This booklet is now in the hands of many law enforcement officers which they use daily. She participated in the charging decisions in numerous wildlife trafficking cases including the infamous ivory trafficker Feisal Mohammed.
