Philip Jones ’76, is this year’s Distinguished Business Law Graduate. In addition to his JD, he earned his undergraduate degree from Lewis & Clark in economics. Jones has had a standout career combining estate planning with tax controversy work at Duffy Kekel, which in 2024 merged with Black Helterline around the time of his retirement.
Jones notably argued the landmark Banaitis v. Commissioner case before the U.S. Supreme Court, which addressed the income taxation of damages. Jones was also applauded for his many voluntary contributions to legal education, including his service for many years as an adjunct professor at the Law School, and his efforts in continuing legal education for the practicing Bar.
Jocob McCormack ’22 received the Pro Bono Volunteer Award from the Small Business Legal Clinic. His passion for helping SBLC clients with trademark prosecution and copyright issues is unsurpassed.
Retired Oregon Tax Court Judge Henry Breithaupt received the Pro Bono Volunteer of the Year award for his work with the Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC). One of the LITC student interns presented the award, noting his commitment to both the law students and their clients.
