2025 Wyss Scholar: Shoshana Grossman ’26 Desires to Effectuate Change in the World of Land Conservation and Protection

Shoshana Grossman JD ’26 is one of two Wyss Scholars selected from Lewis & Clark Law School in 2025. Shoshana plans to to leverage her education to effectuate change in the world of land conservation and protection, specifically at the intersection of public lands, waters, and indigenous law.

Law student Shoshana Grossman ’26 grew up on the rivers of Missouri, spending as much time outside as she, her dad, and his ability to unravel fishing line could manage. While in college at Washington University in St. Louis, Shoshana participated in the Pathfinder Program in Environmental Sustainability and canvassed for Environment America’s Grand Canyon National Monument campaign. Shoshana’s passion for public lands management and protection really came to a head, however, during her first season with the National Park Service as an interpretive ranger at Arches National Park. After her first season at Arches, Shoshana continued returning during summers to Arches and Mesa Verde National Parks, before transitioning into summer biological science work at Grand Teton and Glacier National Parks.

Shoshana came to law school from a background in land management with a desire to effectuate change in the world of land conservation and protection, specifically at the intersection of public lands, waters, and indigenous law. During school, Shoshana has engaged with her community at Lewis & Clark as a public lands project coordinator for Northwest Environmental Defense Center, a Native American Law Students Association Board Member, and an incoming Environmental Law Review form & style editor. For her 1L summer, Shoshana worked as the clerk for Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance. This summer, she will work for Western Environmental Law Center, based out of Helena, MT.

Shoshana loves few things as much as she loves pristine lands and rivers, particularly those of the Southwest. In her free time she loves skiing, biking, and spending as much time as possible on rivers with people that make precious time on public lands all the more special. She is thrilled to continue using her knowledge, experience, and passion to advocate for and support these special places.

About the Wyss Scholars Program

Lewis & Clark Law School was selected in 2017 to be part of the Wyss Scholars Program. Funded by The Wyss Foundation, a private, charitable foundation dedicated to land conservation, the Wyss Scholars Program seeks to identify and support a new generation of leaders focused on land conservation issues. Lewis & Clark is one of only a few law schools in the country selected for this program.

Two Wyss Scholars are selected from Lewis & Clark Law School each year on the basis of their leadership potential and academic strength and their commitment to furthering land conservation.

GEI staff attorney expressed concerns about Pacific Power’s decision to remove the Boardman to Hemingway planned transmission line from its Integrated Resource Plan. In response to a citizens’ request to revoke the certificate allowing condemnation of private property.

GEI, Sierra Club, Mobilizing Climate Action Together, and the Northwest Energy Coalition argued that the that the certificate was premised upon the transmission line’s “broad public benefits, not the needs of a single private entity.” Allowing PacifiCorp to change course would “violate the spirit and legal framework under which the line was approved by this commission,” Alex Houston, an attorney with the Green Energy Institute who represents the groups, told commissioners. It would also “harm Oregon customers and set a dangerous precedent wherein the justifications supporting issuance of a certificate may summarily be disregarded once the utility gets approval,” he said.
