Leaving a Lasting Legacy

A 1969 alum wanted to leave a lasting legacy to honor two people who were instrumental to his success at Lewis & Clark Law School: Judge John F. Gantenbein and Professor Ronald Lansing. He wanted Gantenbein to be honored as someone who took a chance and admitted those who were “on the fringe” of academic testing and kept the law school afloat with his personal equity. The alumnus also has fond memories of Professor Lansing, who treated his students as equals and would often play a casual game of pickup basketball with students.

In their honor, the alumnus created a charitable gift annuity (CGA) through a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) from his IRA with Lewis & Clark Law School. This not only gave him a fixed annual payment, but it also reduced his federal income tax, and because of this gift, the Law School was also able to create a Lansing/Gantenbein nook for students located in the Boley Law Library.
