Klamath-Siskiyou Wildlands Center

October 25, 2024

This past summer, I had the incredible opportunity to work as a law clerk for the Klamath-Siskiyou Wildlands Center (KS Wild), a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting Oregon’s lands through science-based conservation, policy, and community action. Under the direct supervision of George, I engaged deeply with complex legal issues, gaining invaluable experience in environmental law and advocacy.

One of the key projects I worked on was drafting a litigation memo for the Last Chance timber sale, which involved analyzing the legal merits of challenging the sale and addressing the broader implications for forest conservation. I also played a significant role in our efforts related to the South End CX project, focusing on extraordinary circumstances and the inappropriateness of categorical exclusions (CX) under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). These experiences allowed me to refine my legal research and writing skills while directly contributing to KS Wild’s mission to protect old-growth forests and preserve biodiversity.

The PILP stipend was essential in allowing me to dedicate my full attention to my work at KS Wild. It covered my living expenses in an area with a high cost of living, freeing me from the need to seek additional employment and enabling me to fully engage with the important work being done at KS Wild. The support from PILP not only facilitated my summer experience but also validated the hard work I put into my role, knowing that it was appreciated by those who share my commitment to public interest law.

My time at KS Wild was a transformative experience that solidified my passion for environmental law. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to such meaningful work and to learn from dedicated professionals in the field. The skills and insights I gained this summer will undoubtedly guide my future legal career as I continue to advocate for environmental justice and protection.
