Data Privacy Group Holds Successful 5th Annual Data Privacy Symposium
On February 16, 2024, the Data Privacy Group held its annual Data Privacy Symposium, marking the five year anniversary since its initial debut.

On Friday, February 16, the Data Privacy Group (DPG) held its 5th Annual Data Privacy Symposium: AI’s New Role in Informational & Decisional Data Privacy, hosting panelists from national firms and corporate groups. Speakers discussed trending topics such as legal and business risks for artificial intelligence (AI), kids’ data, and more.
Nathan Morales and Joseph Heinlein from Stoel Rives shared insight into the intersection between law, AI, and data in their panel “More Data, More Problems: Legal Risks for AI Training.” Following their presentation, participants were invited to join Kasey Hemphill, Amanda Gratchner, and Bryan Thompson from Intel, Nordstrom, and Microsoft respectively, for a panel discussing the business risks and rewards behind AI. Hannah Pageler (ZoomInfo) and Eva Novick (Miller Nash) then discussed the Oregon Consumer Privacy Act in the symposium’s third panel of the day.
Matthew Bergman from the Social Media Victims Law Center presented on Section 230 and Social Media, followed by a panel on navigating generative AI in the legal practice delivered by Jacob Hasler and Matthew Mertens from Perkins Coie. The symposium wrapped up with a panel on health and kids’ data featuring Laura Lemire of Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt, as well as a reception for participants and panelists in the Legal Research Center.
“Our goal this year was to establish the Data Privacy Symposium as the go-to networking and community-building event for the Oregon privacy community, and I believe we have done that,” said Max Delman, President of the Data Privacy Group. “The DPG looks forward to seeing the Symposium grow in years to come.”
