Karla E. Márquez ’23 Joins Low Income Tax Clinic as Clinical Fellow
Karla E. Márquez ’23, a dedicated legal advocate, joins the Low Income Tax Clinic as a clinical fellow following a doubling of the clinic’s funding for the 2023-2024 school year.

In a significant development following the Low Income Tax Clinic’s (LITC) recent funding increase for the 2023-2024 school year, the clinic has welcomed a new clinical fellow, Karla E. Márquez ’23. Her addition to the team marks a pivotal moment for the LITC, as she brings her experience and expertise to their mission of assisting low-income taxpayers.
Márquez is no stranger to the LITC, having previously been involved with the clinic as both a new and advanced student and as Professor Lora’s dedicated research assistant. Now, in her new role as a clinical fellow, Márquez is set to play a crucial part in the clinic’s operations, focusing on handling complex tax controversy cases, with her background in tax law, immigration law, and employment law making her a formidable asset.
Moreover, Márquez’s collaboration with the law school’s recently established Advocacy Center, directed by Joanna Perini-Abbott, will bolster the LITC’s capabilities even further. This collaboration is expected to amplify the clinic’s advocacy and support for low-income taxpayers who rely on their expertise.
Márquez’s professional journey underscores her deep commitment to justice and the rights of marginalized communities, particularly within immigrant populations. Her experience working with immigrant communities, with a particular emphasis on immigration, tax, and employment law, makes her a valuable addition to the LITC. Furthermore, her dedication to data privacy aligns perfectly with the clinic’s mission to protect the rights and privacy of its clients.
Her previous positions include serving as an extern at the LASO Farmworker Program, a judicial extern for the Hon. Robyn Ridler Aoyagi at the Oregon Court of Appeals, and a judicial extern for the Hon. Youlee Yim You at the United States District Court, District of Oregon. These experiences have equipped her with a strong foundation and unique insights into the legal challenges faced by vulnerable communities.
