Professor Thomas J. Schoenbaum to be 2021-22 International Law Distinguished Visitor

Lewis & Clark Law School is pleased to announce that our 2021-22 International Law Distinguished Visitor will be Thomas J. Schoenbaum, Harold S. Shefelman Professor of Law at the University of Washington School of Law and Fellow at the University of Georgetown Institute of International Economic Law. Professor Schoenbaum is one of the most prolific and respected scholars of international law. Over the course of decades he has authored numerous textbooks and a multitude of law review articles in the fields of admiralty and maritime law, international business transactions, international environmental law, and international trade law. Among the latter is the fourth edition of International Trade Law (co-authored with Daniel C.K. Chow), scheduled to be published in February 2022. In addition, his latest book—The Law and Legal System of the United States—is a one-volume, 842-page entrée into the entire range of United States law.
Professor Schoenbaum’s Distinguished International Law Lecture will be delivered from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm on Wednesday, February 2 via Zoom Webinar. It will be entitled “U.S. Trade Policy under Trump and Biden: The Ongoing Trade War and Standoff at the WTO.” Among the issues he will explore are the tariffs imposed by the Trump Administration and their impact; the extent to which the Biden Administration has maintained those tariffs and why; the status of judicial review of the Trump and Biden trade policies; the decisions by both administrations not to appoint new members to the WTO Appellate Body, which has resulted in that body becoming unable to hear appeals; and what the future holds for the WTO and U.S. trade policy more broadly.
The lecture will be open to the Lewis & Clark community and the general public. However, in order to receive the login link one must RSVP in advance. To do so, please click here.
Prior to his current roles, Professor Schoenbaum served as Research Professor of Law at the George Washington University School of Law; as Professor of Graduate Studies at the International Christian University, Tokyo, Japan; as Dean Rusk Chair of International and Comparative Law at the University of Georgia; and as Associate Dean and Founding Executive Director of the Admiralty Law Center, Tulane University, among other positions.
He holds a BA degree (summa cum laude) from St. Joseph’s College (Indiana); a D.E.S.S. in Philosophy (Diplôme d’etudes supérieurs specialisées) from the Université Catholique de Louvain (Belgium); a JD (with distinction) from the University of Michigan; and a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Cambridge (U.K.).
