A Big Week For The Center For Animal Law Studies

LC SALDF is lucky to have the support of the Center for Animal Law Studies (CALS), a center made up of fantastic individuals, many of whom are LC SALDF alumni and faculty advisors.  Learn more about the many accomplishments of CALS (just in the past week)!

PUBLICATIONS

A few publications came out this week:

Kathy Hessler, Becky Jenkins and Kelly Levenda Cruelty to Human and Non-Human Animals in the Wild Caught Fishing Industry, 18.1 Sustainable Dev. L. & Pol’y 30, (Fall 2017).   Becky is our Aquatic Animal Law Initiative Fellow and Kelly is one of our amazing alums at the Animal Legal Defense Fund.

Kathy Hessler, Joyce Tischler, Pamela Hart, and Sonia Waisman, Animal Law - New Perspectives on Teaching Traditional Law, Carolina Academic Press (2017).  The book is available as a hard copy and also digitally by chapter.

INTERNATIONAL ANIMAL LAW NEWS

Pamela Frasch and international program director, Natasha Dolezal, just returned from Kenya and Rwanda. During their time in country, they presented on animal law and legal education to faculty, deans, and law students at Strathmore Law School (Nairobi) with students and faculty from surrounding law schools including Kenyatta, University of Nairobi, Catholic, and Riara University. They also made a similar presentation to the dean and faculty members from the University of Kigali Law School, as well as meeting with prosecutors and Rwanda’s Prosecutor General. They also presented on animal law and education at the two-day “Eastern and Southern Africa Roundtable on Illegal Trade, Trafficking and Prosecution of Wildlife Offences” held in Mombasa, Kenya attended by judges, prosecutors, and law faculty from Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, and Mozambique. Also present in Mombasa were other stakeholders from the International Association of Prosecutors (Denmark), Wildlife Justice Commission (The Hague), Wildlife Direct (Kenya), World Wildlife Fund (WWF - Tanzania) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODC).  Also presenting at the two events in Kenya was Animal Law LLM alum, Jim Karani, director of legal affairs for WildlifeDirect.
