Submissions Guidelines

Environmental Law invites environmental law scholars, legal practitioners, and other environmental law and policy experts to submit manuscripts for review and potential publication in one of the Journal’s quarterly issues.

Environmental Law prioritizes manuscripts that focus on United States environmental laws, regulations, and/or statutes. Our Submissions Editors will also consider manuscripts that cover U.S. environmental policy issues and/or international environmental law and policy topics.

Student Submissions (Notes and Comments)

Notes are full-length, student written legal articles. Case Comments are shorter than full-length articles and examine a recent environmental case or related legal issue. Due to the high volume of submissions Environmental Law receives, the Journal only accepts student-written articles from Lewis & Clark Law School JD or L.L.M candidates.

Citations

Manuscript citations should conform to The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation (21st Ed. 2020). Environmental Law prioritizes reviewing manuscripts with complete and accurate footnote citations containing minimal Bluebook errors.

It is the Journal’s policy to ensure that all factual assertions are supported. Should your article be selected for publication, our editors may conduct additional research during the publication process to add footnotes to any uncited assertions.

Article Length

Environmental Law has no length limitation, however our editors give preference to articles that are forty pages or less, single-spaced.

 

How to Submit

Authors may submit manuscripts via email at envtlsubmissions@lclark.edu, or via Scholastica:

Submissions should contain a manuscript, cover letter, and resume or CV. Authors may submit manuscripts either in PDF or Microsoft Word format. A Microsoft Word version of the manuscript will be required for the publication process.

 

Review Process and Expedited Review

Environmental Law reviews manuscripts throughout the year on a rolling basis. The review process typically takes between one to three weeks.

Authors who receive an offer of publication from a different journal may request an expedited review. To request an expedited review, please email envtlsubmissions@lclark.edu and include the date by which you would like a response from Environmental Law. Environmental Law requires a minimum of five days to conduct an Expedited Review.

 

Publication Offers

Environmental Law will send an offer of publication via email or scholastica as soon as the Board has reached a decision. Authors are typically required to respond to the Editor-in-Chief within two weeks of the offer of publication date.
