Practice of Immigration Law: Practicum
Practice of Immigration Law: Practicum - Professor Susan Dussault
- Course Number: LAW-748
- Course Type: Experiential and Highly Specialized
- Credits: 2-4
- Enrollment Limit: 6
- Description: This 2-4 credit practicum (2 for the class; optional 2 for a placement) lets you experience what it’s like to practice immigration law. We’ll focus on the types of client matters that most immigration attorneys handle (regardless of whether they work in private practice, for a nonprofit organization, or for a government agency): naturalization; family-based immigration; asylum; and inadmissibility waivers. In addition, each student will have the opportunity to select a topic that most interests them (such as T or U nonimmigrant visas, special immigrant juvenile status, VAWA self-petitions, DACA, humanitarian parole, parole-in-place, or cancellation of removal) and then present it to the class. Although immigration law is the substantive focus of the course, students will learn about and develop many skills that are transferable to, and crucial for success in, virtually all areas of legal practice. Students who wish to do the optional 2 credit internship should contact the professor as soon as possible to discuss requirements and possible placements.
- Prerequisite: none
- Evaluation Method: Credit/No Credit

The American Bar Association accreditation standards require students to regularly attend the courses in which they are registered. Lewis & Clark expects students to attend classes regularly and to prepare for classes conscientiously. Specific attendance requirements may vary from course to course. Any attendance guidelines for a given class must be provided to students in a syllabus or other written document at the start of the semester. Sanctions (e.g., required withdrawal from the course, grade adjustment, and/or a failing grade) will be imposed for poor attendance.
