Description: This class examines current legal and policy issues concerning the military and veterans in society. The topics include
- technology, the military, and war,
- the draft, the all-volunteer force, and citizens and military service,
- weapons, warriors, and strategic priorities,
- the role of the military in a democratic society,
- the military as an agent of social change,
- the global presence of the U.S. military,
- issues facing veterans returning from military service,
- veterans treatment courts,
- upgrading veterans’ military discharge status and correcting military records,
- systemic flaws within, and systemic reform proposals for, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA),
- the rating disability process,
- filing claims with the VA,
- appealing to the Board of Veterans Appeals,
- appealing to the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims,
- effectively researching statutes, regulations, case law, and other sources related to veterans’ issues, and
- effectively writing a scholarly paper addressing a veterans-related or military-related issue.

- Evaluation Method: The class grade is based on the scholarly paper, completion of all assignments, and regular class attendance.

The American Bar Association accreditation standards require students to regularly attend the courses in which they are registered. Lewis & Clark expects students to attend classes regularly and to prepare for classes conscientiously. Specific attendance requirements may vary from course to course. Any attendance guidelines for a given class must be provided to students in a syllabus or other written document at the start of the semester. Sanctions (e.g., required withdrawal from the course, grade adjustment, and/or a failing grade) will be imposed for poor attendance.
