Description: The dialogue hopes to increase understanding of racism by examining our personal subconscious stereotypes, and to motivate participants to use that understanding to eliminate racism. To those ends, this course will explore the process of racial identity development, i.e. how we grow to view ourselves and others in racial terms. Gaining this awareness and understanding is a necessary first step for any who wish to combat the racism that plagues this country. Talking about race and racism can be hard and painful. The trained facilitators will use a combination of readings and videos to start conversations on topics including, racial identity development, implicit bias, privilege, guilt, racial trauma and suggestions for future antiracism work. The course was created for those taking their first steps into this journey but all are welcome to join this conversation.

Evaluation Method: Credit/No Credit based on attendance, participation and journal entries.

The American Bar Association accreditation standards require students to regularly attend the courses in which they are registered. Lewis & Clark expects students to attend classes regularly and to prepare for classes conscientiously. Specific attendance requirements may vary from course to course. Any attendance guidelines for a given class must be provided to students in a syllabus or other written document at the start of the semester. Sanctions (e.g., required withdrawal from the course, grade adjustment, and/or a failing grade) will be imposed for poor attendance.
