Description: In this class we explore current issues relating to children from the perspective of the child. Topics may include abortion, child custody, abuse and neglect, foster care, the rights of family integrity and association, the constitutional rights of children, the rights of minors to make medical decisions, adoption, corporal punishment, and juvenile delinquency. Each class will choose the topics upon which we will focus. We ask questions such as, what rights do or should children have? How are those rights protected and how can they be better protected? What to do when the rights of the child conflict with the rights of the parent(s)? How far can the state intrude into domestic life to resolve these problems?

Evaluation Method: class participation, performance as group leader for one class, and research paper.

The American Bar Association accreditation standards require students to regularly attend the courses in which they are registered. Lewis & Clark expects students to attend classes regularly and to prepare for classes conscientiously. Specific attendance requirements may vary from course to course. Any attendance guidelines for a given class must be provided to students in a syllabus or other written document at the start of the semester. Sanctions (e.g., required withdrawal from the course, grade adjustment, and/or a failing grade) will be imposed for poor attendance.
