Law in Spanish

  • Course Number: LAW-275
  • Course Type: Experiential
  • Credits: 1
  • Enrollment Limit: Determined by the Registrar
  • Scheduling Note: For the first three weeks this course will meet for one hour on Tuesday evenings and then will continue on Saturdays for longer periods of time (not to exceed the necessary time allotted for this class).
  • Description:  This class is for students who are already fluent enough to do assigned readings and engage in class activities in Spanish. For this reason, during the first week of class the professor will make certain that each student has the ability to participate at the required level.

The class will be organized around four simulations constructed to give class members practice in communicating with and representing Spanish-speaking clients who speak little or no English. In each module, the class will prepare for the simulation in the first week, engage in the simulation the second week, and engage in feedback during the third week. There will be reading assignments and other preparatory activities outside of class. While each semester necessarily has a topical focus, the class is not meant to teach the substance of that area of law, and students will be able to participate successfully without having previously taken a course in that area.

This seminar is offered on a credit/no credit basis, based on class participation. There will be no exam or paper, and for that reason there will be a very strict attendance policy.

  • Prerequisite: none
  • Evaluation Method: Class participation
