- Description: Employment Law surveys the legal regulation of workplace relationships. Topics include employment at will, hiring, privacy rights, and mandatory arbitration. Federal overtime and minimum wage protections are explored, as are laws governing unemployment and workplace safety. The course provides a limited overview of workplace discrimination laws, while emphasizing that Employment Discrimination allows for a much more thorough discussion of antidiscrimination regulations. In addition to learning the foregoing legal rules, the course considers the norms and policies that underlie various workplace regulations. By the completion of this course, students should have proficient knowledge of these topics such that they can advise employees and employers of their respective rights.

The American Bar Association accreditation standards require students to regularly attend the courses in which they are registered. Lewis & Clark expects students to attend classes regularly and to prepare for classes conscientiously. Specific attendance requirements may vary from course to course. Sanctions (e.g., required withdrawal from the course, grade adjustment, and/or a failing grade) will be imposed for poor attendance.
