- Description: The first year, year-long Lawyering class focuses on case analysis, case synthesis, statutory construction, research, written communication, oral advocacy and professionalism. During the fall semester, students engage in objective analysis. They analyze several mock client files and legal issues and prepare intra-office memos. Students develop an understanding of the rigor required as a lawyer to effectively research, analyze, evaluate, and communicate about the law. Students also gain an understanding of the critical role professionalism plays in serving a client and working in the legal field.

The American Bar Association accreditation standards require students to regularly attend the courses in which they are registered. Lewis & Clark expects students to attend classes regularly and to prepare for classes conscientiously. Specific attendance requirements may vary from course to course. Any attendance guidelines for a given class must be provided to students in a syllabus or other written document at the start of the semester. Sanctions (e.g., required withdrawal from the course, grade adjustment, and/or a failing grade) will be imposed for poor attendance.
