The 2021 Crime Victim Law Conference is two Conferences. A Virtual Conference will be held over five Fridays – October 15, 22, 29 and November 5 and 12. The In-Person Conference will be in Portland, Oregon November 11-13.

Virtual Conference attendees receive real time access to the (4) Friday Virtual Pre-Sessions and One Day Streaming on November 12th. Attendees will also have access to recorded livestream sessions for 90 days Post Conference. In-Person Conference attendees can add a Virtual Conference ticket when they register for an additional $80. Some topics that will be part of this year’s Virtual Conference include:

In-Person Conference attendees receive access to In Person Sessions November 11-13 (select from either one day or 2.5 days), Experiential Training, Hackathon, Networking, Meals, Swag, and Wellness Sessions as as opportunity to participate in service project and access to optional group trips (additional cost): Riverboat, Winery, & Shopping. NEW THIS YEAR AT THE IN-PERSON CONFERENCE!
POLICY HACKATHON
Be a part of the solution! Draft victims’ rights policy! In-person attendees are invited to a facilitated, attendee-driven policy development workshop. Attendees—working in small group settings—will harness their collective expertise to craft policy solutions on key victims’ rights issues. Policy experts will open the session with some key strategy considerations and will be on hand to share expertise as requested. The Hackathon will take place on Friday, November 12 in the afternoon with two breakout rooms in each of the afternoon breakout blocks dedicated to this work. The vision is of a rich discussion and robust development of ideas that can help advance victims’ rights policy nationally. Friday’s closing plenary will include presentation of each developed policy proposals. The proposals will be added to the Conference App and between Friday and end of the Conference, the entire community attending virtually and in-person will have a chance to vote on which policy initiative we want to advance! Announcement of the winning policy and policy team will be made take place during the closing plenary.
INTERACTIVE PRACTICAL SKILLS ADVOCACY
Creative Chaos. Despite the fact that victims’ rights have been the law for decades, prosecutors, defense attorneys, judges and the public are often unfamiliar with the laws. As a result, victims’ rights attorneys and advocates are confronted with illogical, disconnected, and far-fetched objections when they assert victims’ rights. In the face of these objections, even the most seasoned victims’ rights attorney and advocate find themselves temporarily speechless. In two interactive sessions (one tailored to attorneys and one to advocates) we will draw on exercises and approaches from improv to develop and practice effective ways to talk about victims’ rights and respond to even the wildest of oppositions. Join this creative chaos and hone your skills!
Scenario-Based Advocacy In sessions facilitated by NCVLI lawyers, attendees will be presented with applicable law and an unfolding victims’ rights scenario. Working in small groups, attendees will craft the strongest arguments possible for advancing victims’ rights on some of the most common issues such as the right to be heard on release conditions to the right to be present at hearings. These interactive sessions will harness collective expertise to craft the best arguments on fundamental victims’ rights. There will be both foundational and advanced sessions.
WELLNESS TRACK
Morning Jumpstart. Each morning you will have options for how to start your day. Options will include a run and/or walk, gentle yoga/stretching and breath work.
Thursday Evening Wind Down. Following the reception you can complete your day with a guided visualization/relaxation medication through breath and sound.
